VENKATAPATHY: "My early works were done in oil on canvas as well as in water colours and tempera (drawings). The figure which interested me most was rooted in the soil folk proto-type. I always took a good deal of interest in traditional Indian themes in the early phases of my art- themes deriving from mythology, folklore, rural life and landscape. Not only my themes but my concepts and perceptions also were traditional.
Later I switched to the discipline of drawing. I did a lot of pen and ink line drawings, just to get the feel of the basics. I drew on huge, sprawling surfaces. Even then my motive was mythological. Gradually, after I had acquired some skill in drawing, I decided to go in for painting. But my first love even today remains drawing. I love the line - its flow, its smoothness, its succinctness, its sensuousness. Oh, I love it".
