"My work explores the experience of my youth-shyness, love, eroticism, rebellion, visions of freedom, confusion. My paintings are memories made manifest.'
Sailesh works with complex human feelings and emotions. Some of them deal with the searching of an adolescent, when everything about life appears interesting and vague, arousing the curiosity of the young mind. The human form is upside down, the hand extended as if reaching into the depth to locate something. Another aspect Sailesh deals with also has to do with searching. This is the relationship of the individual with God; the God within oneself, if one can realise Him, that would be the ultimate realisation of truth and self. The human form in these paintings are thin and elongated; the person is reaching out to something, worried only about getting it, without even bothering where he is standing. The experience seems to make him blow out fire, hair standing out, the whole body set inside a warm glow of yellow or he seems to be shrouded by a translucent white material, set against a deep dark background. The man in these works is too engrossed in his task that he looks rather pensive and brooding; there is a subtle tinge of eroticism.
His source of inspiration is nature and the relationship between man and woman. In fact, 'relationship' is a theme predominant in his work. The creative struggle and problems relating to human existence is another obvious concern.
He also explores the mysterious link between the body, the soul and the spiritual plane. He portrays complex, human feelings and emotions. Some of them deal with the 'search' of an adolescent-when everything about life appears interesting and vague-arousing the curiosity of the young mind.
In his recent works, using foil, paper thread and acrylic on canvas, Shailesh captures both the figurative and the abstract. The use of specific colors-a sober blue, a vibrant red, a soft yellow-express agony, beauty and love. Fish starts, scribbled lines and the human form appear repeatedly-creating a personal world of images.
Some of his paintings are made up of four separate pieces of canvas and some two. These are also reflective of the uncertainties; the four piece works according to the artist is also to break away from the usual manner of using a large canvas, the smaller pieces enabling him to operate over the surface with more ease; he also feels that generally in most paintings the centre has the most important element of the work, whereas in his work, it is the point of joining the pieces, moving the major elements away.
After working for a period at the Lalit Kala Akademi studios, Sailesh now has his own studio at the Cholamandal artist village.
"One important aspect of Shailesh's work is that it is open to various interpretations and explanations, making its criticism very subjective. One can look at and imagine all kinds of meanings and symbolism. You think you have finally cracked the puzzle when along comes the artist and listening to him give the works a new perception and forces you to question and think again. While some things become crystal clear, a lot more questions arise leaving one a little confused." - Kanchana Arni
